530,000 PS3s sold in November, half of 360 sales Kinect bundles

Wedbush's Michael Pachter reports that sales of Sony's console were below expectations; Microsoft's motion-sensing camera outselling PlayStation Move 5-to-1.

Following NPD's report of US November sales yesterday, both Nintendo and Microsoft announced sales figures for their respective game machines. The DS was the best-selling platform for the month with 1.5 million units, followed by the Xbox 360 with 1.37 million units, and the Wii with 1.2 million units.

The only company not to explicitly report sales figures was Sony, which did release a statement last night saying that sales of its PlayStation 3 console had increased 112 percent month-over-month from October. Seeing how the console sold 250,000 units during that month, the PlayStation 3 sold 530,000 units during November.

The 530,000 figure was backed up by Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who had predicted the $300 console would sell 650,000 units during the month. He blamed the shortfall partially on "modest" sales of the PlayStation Move controller, which was in its third month on the market in November. As of November 30, some 4.1 million Move controllers had shipped worldwide.

Pachter also noted that one-third of PS3 sales were $400 PlayStation Move bundles, versus one-half of all Xbox 360 purchases being Kinect bundles. (There are two Kinect bundles, a $300 4GB model and $400 250GB model.) "Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles outsold PS3 Move console bundles by more than 5 to 1," said the analyst.

Pachter said that November was a "strong" first month for Microsoft's controller-less peripheral, which the company is predicting will sell 5 million units by year's end. In its first 25 days on the market, Kinect sold 2.5 million units worldwide.
